Why free contests deserve a place in your year

Entry fees add up. A photographer who enters a dozen paid contests a year can easily spend several hundred euros before winning anything. Free contests let you put work in front of juries, editors and audiences without that cost, and some of them offer prizes that rival paid competitions: publication in print, exhibitions, residencies, equipment and cash.

Free does not mean minor. Foundations, museums, magazines, camera brands and public bodies all run free calls, often because they want to discover new work or to build a collection around a subject. Grants for documentary projects and emerging photographers are very often free to apply.

How free contests are funded

Someone always pays. Usually it is a sponsor that wants its name in front of photographers, a publication that wants fresh portfolios, or an institution with a cultural budget. That is perfectly fine. What matters is what you give in return, and that is set out in the rules.

Read the rights clause first

The most important line in a free contest is the one about rights. A fair contest asks for a non-exclusive licence to show the entries and promote the competition, with your name, for a limited time. Be careful with wording such as "all rights", "in perpetuity", "for any purpose" or "transferable to partners". Those clauses let the organizer, or its sponsor, use your photograph in advertising without paying you. We decline listings with clearly unfair terms, and every listing links straight to the official rules so you can read the clause before you enter.

Signs of a good free contest

  • A named organizer with a real address and a history of past editions
  • A named jury, or at least a clear judging process
  • Prizes described precisely, including what is and is not covered
  • No pressure to buy prints, books or "premium" entries after you submit
  • A published date for results

How we keep this list honest

Every listing on Photographers First is reviewed before it appears. We record the fee as stated in the official rules; if a contest charges for some categories and not others, we say so. Deadlines are converted to your time zone. When a deadline passes, the call leaves this page the same day, so the list only ever shows contests you can still enter.

Want them in your inbox? The Friday list brings the week's new free calls and the deadlines closing soon, every Friday morning. It is free and you can leave with one click.

Questions photographers ask

Are free photo contests worth entering?

Many are. Magazines, foundations and brands run free calls for publication, exhibitions and gear. Read the rights clause: a good contest only asks for a license to promote the competition, not ownership of your images.

How do free contests make money?

Usually through sponsors, brand exposure or building an audience. Be cautious with calls that collect broad image rights or push paid extras after you enter.

How often is this list updated?

Every day. Closed calls drop off automatically when their deadline passes.
