Photo contests by theme

Choose the genre you shoot and see every open contest, award and open call for it, soonest deadline first. Each theme page also explains what juries in that genre look for and what to check before paying a fee.

Why sort contests by theme

Most photographers do not shoot everything. A wildlife photographer has little use for a fashion editorial call, and a documentary photographer is unlikely to win a contest for abstract still life. Sorting by theme cuts a directory of hundreds of calls down to the handful that genuinely fit your work, which is the first step to entering fewer contests and winning more of them.

Themes on Photographers First are assigned when each listing is reviewed. A contest can belong to several themes when its categories cover several genres, so an open contest with a separate black and white category appears in both places. If a contest accepts any subject, you will find it under Open theme.

How to choose the right contests in your genre

Start with the jury. A contest judged by editors, curators and photographers you respect is more likely to reward the kind of work you make, and being shortlisted by them means something. Then look at the prize as a whole: money, publication, exhibition, mentoring or gear, and the number of winners and honourable mentions. A smaller prize shared among many winners can be a better bet than a single large one.

Next, read the rights clause. Fair contests ask for a limited licence to promote the competition and the winning images, with credit, for a fixed period. Avoid calls that claim ownership, unlimited commercial use, or the right to sublicense your work to sponsors without payment. Every listing links directly to the official rules, so the clause is always one click away.

Finally, compare the cost. Entry fees add up quickly over a year. Our entry tracker lets you set a budget, record what you spend and see the results, so you can tell which genres and which kinds of contests actually work for you.

Free contests in every genre

Each theme page has a Free filter. Free calls are often run by magazines looking for portfolios, by foundations that fund projects, and by brands that want to reach photographers. They are worth your time when the organizer is credible and the rights are fair. The complete list is on our free photo contests page.

Deadlines and planning

The calendar of photography competitions has rhythms. Many of the large international awards open in autumn and close in the first months of the year; grants and residencies often follow academic calendars; festivals publish open calls a few months before they open. Use the deadline calendar and closing this week to plan, and set a saved search on a theme to get an email when a new call is listed.
